Will & Grace - Both Single, No Kids (Episode Highlight)

Will & Grace Returns: Nothing Really Changes Yet Nothing Is the Same

WhenWill & Graceaired its finale 11 years ago, it left its audience bewildered and upset. (Grace and Will not speaking for decades? Unthinkable.) That all changed when the cast appeared in a special short during the 2019 election. Thanks to huge fan support and demand, the gang is back to right the wrongs of the past while serving shade to the current White House administration and savagely digging at each other in the way only best friends can. Here’s what happened on the premiere episode of the newWill & Grace.

1) It’s like someone hits pause before the series finale.

Right from the opening, the cast feels like home. The chemistry is easy and quick and the jokes are flying.

2) The gang is still the same—but with smartphones

The opening scene could so easily be pulled from the original series, with Will, Grace, Jack, and Karen gathered around Will’s living room playing charades. However, charades has been replaced with an app, Jack’s dates are on Grindr, Will has taken to voicing his political views while flirting on Facebook, and Grace reads Queerty—all while Karen holds her martini and tunes them all out.

3) “That never happened."

So about that (awful) finale? Never happened. As the gang plays Head Up!, Jack lulls Karen out of a daydream by shaking her pill bottle. She immediately snaps out of it and asks who won the election. She tells them about the crazy dream she just had—Will living with his uniformed boyfriend, Grace marrying her "Jew doctor," and Jack, well, he wasn't there. She asks about their kids, and Will and Grace laugh and confirm that none of that ever happened. Will wraps it up with, “You’re rich, Stan’s alive, both single, no kids.”

Got it? Got it.

4) No one has moved, either.

That’s not entirely true. Grace was married to Leo (Harry Connick Jr), and Will was living with his partner (Bobby Canavale). Since both breakups, Grace is "staying" with Will. Jack still lives down the hall and Karen still is rich, wherever she lives.

5) Politics play a major role in the premiere episode.

The jabs at the current White House are plentiful and hilarious. Each character embodies someone you’ve encountered on your Facebook friend list or you know in real life. Will is now “woke.” Karen is a Republican who voted for Trump and is friends with Melania. Grace is a “low effort, high impact” feminist, so, like, a white lady on Facebook. And Jack is liberal but never talks politics with dates.

6) Grace has another employee—and he’s not white.

Will and Gracedebuted in an era where diversity wasn’t really a consideration in Hollywood. Most of NBC’s beloved shows had primarily white casts (Friends,Seinfeld,Frasier, etc.), but that may be changing with this reboot. Though we only see a few minutes of Tony, a new addition to the cast played byHamilton’s Anthony Ramos, we know he's a designer and slightly afraid of Karen (but not offended by her). Whether or not he’s a permanent fixture to Grace Adler Designs remains to be seen.

7) Karen is still Grace’s assistant.

Unlike the Karen of the past, she's actually somewhat useful to Grace, as she uses her influence to get her boss jobs—like decorating the White House—while showering her with verbal abuse. In other words, still the best assistant ever.

8) Grace is conflicted about taking the job decorating Trump’s Oval Office—for a second.

A dig at white feminism? Perhaps. She marched with a pussyhat, so howcouldshe take a job decorating his office? But as she storms off, she tells Karen she’ll be there.

9) Karen is peak Karen.

From the way she unapologetically insults her friends while holding a never-empty martini glass to grabbing Grace’s breasts in the office, Karen is that non-PC friend we both love and hate at once. She remains true to who she is regardless of whether we like her opinions or not—and we can't help but be amused.

10) But Jack has really toned down.

Has Jack...matured? He's quit acting and is now an entrepreneur, taking time in this episode to list off his many failed business ventures. But while the digs at Will’s weight and love life are still going strong, Jack's acting a bit like he's on meds—much like all of us right now.

11) Will and Jack head to D.C. to meet Will’s love interest.

Turns out the heated political writing Will was doing featured some heavy flirtation with a Congressman who wants to overturn environmental protections. But he’s cute, so Jack arranges a visit to the White House, where the Congressman is holding a caucus.

12 Jack is dating a Secret Service agent

Jack used his ties to the Secret Service to get himself and Will into the White House. When asked how, he reveals he knows all the Secret Service men. Why? Because “Everybody in the secret service is gay. Who better to read a room?”

13) The digs at Trump are nonstop—and awesome.

From the opening joke about Melania during Heads Up! ("rich, hostage") to Grace finding a fidget spinner and a Russian dictionary on Trump’s desk in the Oval Office, the Trump burns are plentiful and perfect. Special props to guest star Kate Micucci as a White House guide (“Rules don’t mean anything anymore!”) and special guest star Cheetos.

14) The guest stars will be plentiful this season.

If this premiere is any indication (Ramos, Micucci, and Kyle Bornheimer as Jack's former flame in the Secret Service), we’re in store for a variety of guest stars from the stage and screen this season. Tony Award winner Ben Platt has already been announced as a potential love interest for Will. Also, both of Will and Grace’s exes will return in future episodes, with Bobby Cannavale and Harry Connick Jr. reprising their roles.

16) All the quirks we loved from the original are still there.

Yes, Will still giggles like a schoolgirl. Grace still says “WHOA." But best of all, they know each other better than anyone else. There’s no way they'd never speak to each other for decades—even in a dream.
