Why are the ribs sore?

Pain in the ribs is a terribly unpleasant phenomenon that often prevents a person from leading a normal life. Such a symptom may also indicate the presence of a serious disease requiring immediate treatment. Therefore, it is very important to understand why the ribs hurt and what is the cause of this condition. This will be discussed in our article.

The main causes of pain in the ribs

The main causes of pain in the ribs include the following:

  • pathologies directly related to the ribs;
  • spinal disorders;
  • intercostal muscle and nerve pathologies;
  • pregnancy;
  • psychogenic pain.

Injuries and pathology of the ribs

So, the first cause of pain in the ribs are their injuries, which, in turn, are divided into the following states:

  • bruises;
  • cracks;
  • subperiosteal fractures;
  • complete fractures;
  • complex fractures.

When bruised pain from different sides of the ribs can be sharp, but not strong. A bruise or swelling usually occurs in the injury area. Cracks are fractured ribs and are not particularly dangerous. Subperiosteal fractures suggest the safety of the periosteum in the fracture of the rib.Complicated fractures of the ribs can be attributed to comminuted ones, in which severe pain is observed and various complications are possible.

In addition, severe and sharp pains in the ribs are characteristic of a disease such as Tietze syndrome, which is accompanied by inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs.

Diseases of the spine

The main diseases of the spine in which there is pain in the ribs are osteochondrosis and herniated intervertebral disk.

Osteochondrosis is a degenerative disease of the spine. It is characterized, first of all, by back pain, however, the disease often occurs with severe pain in the ribs. For the diagnosis of osteochondrosis should undergo X-rays and, possibly, computed tomography. The presence of pathology is also indicated by aching pains in the chest area, which sharply intensify during physical exertion and sudden movements.

A herniated disc is first accompanied, as a rule, by a slight pain in the ribs, which increases with time. Pain can be observed either on both sides of the ribs, or with one particular. Usually with this disease, the pain is strong and stitching.

The remaining reasons

Intercostal muscle and nerve pathologies that can cause pain in the ribs can be divided into 3 main types:

  1. intercostal neuralgia;
  2. muscle pain;
  3. fibromyalgia.

In intercostal neuralgia, pain in the chest is observed, provoked by pinched nerves. The pain in the ribs with such a disease is acute and stabbing and is aggravated by coughing, changing body position and any sudden movement.

With muscle pain, pain in the ribs is especially strong during bending in different directions and movements in the shoulders. If the cause of pain in fibromyalgia, then it is noted on both sides of the ribs, aggravated by climate change and often accompanied by headaches.

Very often, pain in the ribs is observed in women during pregnancy. The phenomenon is caused, first of all, by an increase in the uterus, which begins to exert pressure on the lower ribs. In addition, the movement of the fetus, in which its legs can rest against the ribs, also provoke pain.

And the last common cause of pain in the ribs is psychogenic pain. Then the pain occurs as a result of neurosis, depression and other disorders.In this case, the pain can be contrived or caused by high muscular tension in the chest area.
