Steps

  1. Disconnect your device from the computer. The process won’t work if you start with the phone connected to the computer. Leave the cable connected to the computer, as you will be reconnecting the phone later in the process.
  2. Power down your device.Turn off your device by holding down the Power button. When the power slider appears, slide it to the right. Wait for your device to completely shut down before continuing.
  3. Press and hold the Home button. With the Home button held connect the device to your computer with the USB cable. When reconnected, your device should turn on.
    • If the low battery screen appears, charge your device for a few minutes and try the process again.
  4. Continue holding the Home button. After a few moments, you will see the "Connect to iTunes" screen on your device. This screen is a picture of an arrow pointing from a USB cable to the iTunes logo. When you see the screen you can release the Home button.
  5. Open iTunes. If you are performing a recovery through iTunes, open the program. iTunes will display a message stating that a device in recovery mode has been connected. From there you can proceed to restore your iOS device.
  6. Exit Recovery Mode.If you want to exit the Recovery Mode, hold down both the Power and the Home buttons for about 10 seconds. This will power down your device. To power it on normally, press and hold the Power button for a moment.

I do not have the option to either restore or update my iPod Touch; rather, it has only one button to restore and update in my version of iTunes. Is there any way to get around this?

That is the same thing as restoring it, so you should go ahead and do it.
    Thanks!
  • Question
I restored my iPod many times and it is still locked. What now?

You didn't restore it if your passcode is still apparent. Read and follow the instructions in this article one more time.
    Thanks!
  • Question
How can I restore my iPod if it is disabled?

If it's an iPad Touch, boot it into recovery mode using the tutorial above. Use a different tutorial if it's a different iPod, then recover it using iTunes.
    Thanks!
  • Question
How do I restore things from iCloud?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Make sure you have a recent backup to restore from. Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap “Erase all content and settings.” From the apps Apps & Data screen, tap Restore from iCloud Backup, then sign into iCloud.
    Thanks!
  • Question
How do I restore my iPod without losing the contents?

You technically cannot do this, but you can try updating it, which installs a new OS and does its best to not harm any data.

  • Question
How can I do an iPod restore when I'm not getting a message on iTunes?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
Try unplugging the iPod, then plugging it back in, and then try to find the restore button when the box comes up.
    Thanks!
  • Question
Is there any difference between restore and hard reset on iPhone?
    Community Answer
Yes. A restore restores factory settings, which includes erasing all the data. A hard reset forces your iPhone to restart if it is unresponsive.
    Thanks!
  • Question
What do I do if my iPod classic won't appear on iTunes, even though I have followed the instructions?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
This is most likely because it isn't recent or it doesn't run a version of Macintosh OS or iPhone OS. If it is an iPod touch 1, you press the sleep/wake button 1 time and let go, then unplug it and do the process again.
    Thanks!
  • Question
I forgot my four digit lock code on my iPhone. What should I do?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
You need to connect it to a computer and follow these steps to restore the device. This is the only way you can unlock it.
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
