How to make yarn?

If there is an animal with thick, fluffy wool at home, the material for knitting can be made independently. It can be not only sheep or rabbits, which are the main supplier of wool for their owners. Excellent yarn can also be made from down dogs and even cats.

Things related to dog or cat hair have not only excellent thermal insulation, but also healing properties. The techniques of hand spinning over the millennia of their existence have hardly changed. Comprehend their basics and make yarn for the same socks can be two weeks.

As before, only a spindle and a spinner are used for this work (spinning weight). At the same time, the spindle can be simplified. To make the process more convenient, it is worth making a special suspension for tow (combed fluff). This can be a simple board tied to a chair so that the tow hooked on it is at face level.

In the early stages of training, it is unlikely to immediately control and evenly pull the fluff out of the tow,and spinning the yarn. It is better to prepare a shallow enameled cup, in which you can put a spinning wheel for rotation.

Spinning process

First of all, you should prepare wool. For this:

  1. we touch it with our hands, we throw out the knots and garbage;
  2. we scratch it with a special brush or a stiff comb massage to a fluffy state.

Then you can proceed to the spinning. Yarn do so:

  1. tie a bundle of fluff (tow) on the stand;
  2. gently pull a strand out of it (about 4-5 centimeters wide and 8-10 centimeters long);
  3. twisting the strand into a thread until it gathers into a ring;
  4. fix this end on the spinning wheel (in the upper part);
  5. pull a strand;
  6. rotate the spinning wheel until a new piece of thread begins to assemble into a ring;
  7. repeat points 5-6 until a length of 50-60 centimeters is formed;
  8. put the spinning wheel in the cup (so it will not roll down when falling);
  9. pull another strand;
  10. rotate the spinning wheel, keeping the thread in tension and evenly feeding wool from the tow;
  11. Gradually winding excess thread on the spinning wheel.

After a lot of thread is wound on the spinning wheel, it is rewound into a ball and continues spinning a new one.When a thread breaks, it is necessary to moisten its ends, add a pinch of fluff on them and twist.
