Blueberry garden: planting, care and reproduction

Blueberry species are numerous. There are also non-cultivated species, they are easy to identify by growth - they are quite low and reach a height of only 50-100 cm. Wild blueberries grow well in northern latitudes on marshy soils among conifers. Creates thick, dense thickets. This kind of blueberry is not suitable for the garden.

It is better to purchase a prepared hybrid seedling, since he will bring more harvest, will have large berries and resistant to pest attacks. By the way, among them there are often stunted specimens that withstand the severe frosts of Siberia and the Urals, survive well under the snow and delight with a sweet and rich harvest. This blueberry has a high frost resistance.

Where to plant blueberries

Berry loves the sunshine and generously thanks for it the sweet taste. Therefore, you should choose open spaces, preferably without drafts (this will provide, for example, a high fence).

Some industrial varieties are able to bear fruit in the shade, but give a savory harvest.

Land should be loose, generously drained, peaty-sandy if possible.

Shrubs develop faster in acidified soil. Loamy soil should be mixed with peat sand in a ratio of 1: 3. If the soil is sour peat, then it can be mixed with half a bag of sand on a bush. Organic fertilizer should be applied to depleted land.

Blueberries are propagated in March-April. During the summer, the seedlings root well and take root, after which they will be able to survive any winter. Autumn planting can lead to the freezing of young shrubs.

Blueberries will take root well if the planting material is of good quality. Suitable for planting shrubs offer highly specialized garden shops and nurseries.

For half an hour before planting the container with the spine should be immersed in water, after the root to extract and knead the earth ball. To root quickly, the roots in the hole must be straightened well.

Transplant blueberries strictly before the buds swell. Gubina pits - half a meter. If you choose a blueberry squat, then it can be planted at a distance of half a meter from the neighboring culture. Tall varieties require at least a meter of space around the root.

The pit before planting should be filled with a mixture of peat and needles, sand and sulfur.At this stage, fertilizers are not applied to the substrate. After the seedling, sprinkle with soil so that the root neck of the plant goes under the ground for 3 cm. Then you have to generously water the plant and mumble at the base. For this fit sawdust, straw, bark and peat (all crushed). The approximate thickness of the mulch is 10 cm.

If the plant is young (up to a year), then after planting it is necessary to cut off the damaged branches. Healthy and strong shoots in the spring pruned from the end.

During the summer, the soil at the root should be loosened. This should be done 2-3 times per summer, but with great care not to damage the roots - a depth of maximum 8 cm. The soil at the roots must always be mulched (before loosening the mulch is removed). Fresh mulch should be added annually.

Blueberry is a delicate plant, demanding clean soil. It should be weeded regularly from weeds. Watering should be regular, but do not allow stagnant moisture at the roots, otherwise the blueberry will die. One bucket per bush twice a week is enough.

The plant is very necessary watering during the formation of flower buds (August). If blueberries dry out a lot, it will yield a small crop.Therefore, in the hot summer it is necessary to provide for the possibility of automatic watering. Thankfully, the plant will be and for the shower on the leaves.

Three times over the summer, blueberries should be fed with nitrogen fertilizer, in summer and then in the fall - with phosphorus.

Care also includes a routine inspection of the crop for infection with diseases and pest attacks. If the leaves turn yellow, become brown or become stained, you should immediately take action.

Shrubs multiply:

  • seeds;
  • handle;
  • layering;
  • by division.

Seeds are sown in autumn. And they rise when the air warms up to 25oC. Blueberry shoots need to be watered and loosened soil. In the spring of seedlings to feed nitrogen, planted them at 2 years of age. They will give fruits only on the 8th year.

Cuttings - the easiest way. The best shoots are cut into 10-15 cm twigs. Month cuttings kept in cool and planted in the ground with sand to a depth of 8 cm.

In the case of bush reproduction, blueberries should be dug out and split the spine into pieces. After which it can immediately be dropped in the ground.
